Child Care Course | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4 Offered

This program is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of the principles and practices of

Child Care and who are seeking to work in the sectors of child minding, nannying, babysitting and related

occupations.

The course is appropriate for those who wish to pursue a career in a variety of Education/Care working

with children aged 0 to 16. This course is available to anyone wanting to become a Registered Nurse to

Children’s nursing. You may not have completed any nursing course before, or you may already be a

qualified nurse on another part of the Professional Register.

Course Content:

There are 6 mandatory units and 1 optional unit making 7 in total.

Each unit is designed to reflect the skills and knowledge that is required to work with children. These include:

Positive relationships

Keeping children safe.

Development of children 0 to 16

Developing own practice

Play and learning

Course Duration: 1 year

Entry Requirements

Basic Literacy and Numeracy skills are desirable however additional support may be offered to support students.

Learners are required to be either employed or working on a voluntary basis for 12 hours a week

It is essential that the student is in placement prior to starting the course.

How will I be assessed?

National Vocational Qualifications are assessed in the work place by an assessor provided by the College.

A minimum of 8 hours a week must be spent in a Childcare setting.

Students will produce a portfolio of evidence for assessment.

Three hours underpinning knowledge in College per week for a year.

Completing all 7 units you will receive certification.

Progression

Following successful completion of the award there is progression onto the following:

Level 3 Children’s Care Learning & Development

Diploma in Childcare and Education

BTEC National Diploma in Early Years.

Level 3

Program content

This course is appropriate for those who wish to pursue a career in Education/Care in a variety of

settings working with children aged 0 to 16.

A successful student will be able to work unsupervised or in a supervisory role in a variety of settings e.g.

Child minding, Nursery, School, Residential care Home, Children’s Day Centre, Special Needs Setting.

Entry Requirements

A level 2 qualification is desirable to move onto level 3. To do level 3 a student MUST also be in a

Supervisory Role within an Educational or Care setting either voluntary or paid.

The student should be able to:

Take on sole responsibility for groups of children

Work under own initiative

Take an active role in planning for children’s learning

Course Content

There are 5 mandatory units and 4 optional units making 9 units in total.

Each unit is designed to reflect the skills and knowledge that is required to work with children. These include:

Developing positive relationships

Create a Health, Safe & Secure Environment.

Reflect and develop practice

Child Development

Plan, Implement and evaluate activities based on relevant curriculum guidance.

Course Duration: 1 year

How will I be assessed?

National Vocational Qualifications are assessed in the work place by an assessor provided by the College.

A minimum of 8 hours a week must be spent in a childcare setting. Three hours underpinning knowledge

in college per week for two years. Students will produce a portfolio of evidence for assessment. Each

successful student completing all required units will receive certification.

Outcome of the course:

On successful completion of the level 3 course you can move on to the following

NVQ Children’s Care, Learning & Development Level 4.

Level 4

Course Content

This course is designed for people working with children from 0 – 16 years and their families in settings

or services whose main purpose is children’s care, learning and development.

A series of day sessions will be held and built around the candidate’s prior and existing experience.

Candidates will be expected to participate fully in group work and discussions.

Duration

Completion of the course is expected within an 18 -24 month period.

Four Mandatory Units to be completed:

Establish and develop working relationships

Support policies, procedures and practice to safeguard children and ensure their inclusion and well-being

Support programs for the promotion of children’s development

Reflect on, review and develop own practice

Optional units to choose from:

Support and evaluate the curriculum for children’s early learning

Ensure Health and Safety requirements are met in your area of responsibility

Manage finance for your area of responsibility

Safeguard children from harm

Recruit, select and retain colleagues

Course Duration: 1 year

Entry Requirements

Candidates must have the potential and opportunity to gain evidence in the workplace for this

qualification. It is desirable that the candidate has already attained a Level 3 qualification.

Assessment Guidelines

This course contains some units which have been imported from other NOS/NVQ/SNVQ qualifications and candidate’s prior experience and learning may be assessed and accredited during the candidate’s initial assessment.

Evidence of a candidate’s performance competence and knowledge will be derived from an assessor

observations or testimony from an expert witness. Detailed additional guidance is provided on a unit

basis of all other acceptable performance assessment methods.

Candidates must be able to apply the specified knowledge and understanding to their work practice.

Assessments will be undertaken by Runshaw Business Centre tutors and observations are required in the workplace.
